First Day in the Swamp
Our first day in the swamp was successful! The caterpillar in the photo was one of our all-stars.
I have an extra credit question for my students. One of the goals of this research is to monitor the parasitoids on the caterpillars that we find. I'm sure you've heard of parasites in your 7th grade science class. I'd like you to find out the difference between a parasite and a parasitoid. Please post your response to the comment at the end of today's post or email it to me.
One of my team mates took a bit of video of some forest tent caterpillars today. I added the music from a jazz band I saw in New Orleans and this is how it looks:

Ms. Carreau,
This is Mr. Farrell's 5/6B class and we just watched your video. It was a little hard to see what was going on. We are very excited to skype with you during our next class so that we won't take our test on WWII. :)+<
Ms. Carreau,
This is Mr. Farrell's 7/8B class and we just watched your video. IT looked like the caterpillars were dancing. What kind were they? Alysha C. wants to know what they were doing?
As I stated in my post, they are forest tent caterpillars. They aren't very interesting to me because they are all over my yard in NY, and they are quite a pest in the garden. They really weren't dancing, they were displaying a defense against predators (us). When they move that way as a group it confuses any birds that might be about to eat them.
Thanks for your great comments and questions.
Hi, mom! Cool caterpillar clips. Sounds like you're having fun. See any alligators yet? Or wild boars? Did they give you a machete? If so, awesome!
By the way, nice 'anonymous' comment. Looks like you're interrupting a WWII test!
Love, Glenn
Mrs. Carreau,
This is Hannah Riordan. I didn't understand at first what was going on in the movie and i also didn't understand the loud music, but once i realized that the movie was on baby caterpillars, the song crazy about my "baby" made sense to me too. Hope you are having fun!
Ms. Carreau,
This is Mr. Farrell's 1/2 A class. We are writing this after skyping with you. We also just watched your dancing caterpillars video. Thanks for taking the time out to speak with us. Hope you see an alligator.

Hello Mrs. Carreau! Just wanted to tell you that we're doing well with Mr. Marr in Science class and he is a really good teacher. We're taking the science test tomorrow and I think we're ready. Thanks for preparing us for the test. Wish us luck!
